Side by side

How we picked

This guide draws from a pool of 16 Murphy cabinet bed listings, all of which are titled as cabinet beds, Murphy cabinets, or Murphy chests. The picks are ordered by the number of built-ins stated in the title (charging stations, desks, sofas), then by stated mattress size (Queen and King first, then Full, Twin XL, Twin), and finally by the order in the pool file. Listings that state no size come last. Beds are compared on stated details and live prices only; no claims are made about performance or quality beyond what the seller states.

How to choose

Wall bed or cabinet bed

A cabinet bed folds into a freestanding chest or cabinet, while a wall bed mounts to the wall. Cabinet beds are often easier to move and can serve as a piece of furniture when closed. The listings in this guide are all cabinet beds, so you are looking at chest-style options that fold down.

Pick the mattress size for the room

The mattress size stated in the title tells you the sleeping surface. A queen is the largest in this guide, followed by full and twin. A larger size needs more floor space when open, so measure your room and read the listing's own dimensions. The title may not state dimensions, so check the product page.

Vertical or horizontal fold

Cabinet beds can fold vertically (head up) or horizontally (sideways). The listings in this guide do not state the fold direction, so you will need to read the product details. A vertical fold is narrower when closed, while a horizontal fold is lower. The listing gives the real sizes.

What the built-ins add (desk, sofa, charging)

Some cabinet beds include a desk, sofa, or charging station. In this guide, several listings state charging stations, which can keep devices powered while the bed is folded away. A desk or sofa is not stated in any of these picks, so if you need one, look for a listing that mentions it.

Ready cabinet or DIY kit

A cabinet bed is a finished piece of furniture, while a DIY kit requires you to build the cabinet. All picks in this guide are cabinet beds, so they come as a complete unit. A kit is not a finished cabinet, and the listing says what is in the box.

What this guide leaves out (and why)

This guide compares beds on stated details and live prices only. It does not cover weight limits, wall anchoring, ceiling height, assembly time, or materials quality, because the catalogue has no data for them. The maker's listing and instructions are the place to read those details.

Questions

What is a Murphy cabinet bed?

A Murphy cabinet bed is a bed that folds into a freestanding cabinet or chest when not in use. Unlike a wall bed, it does not need to be mounted to the wall, making it easier to move. The listings in this guide are all cabinet beds, and the title states the size and any built-ins.

Does this guide cover weight limits, wall anchoring or ceiling height?

No. The catalogue has no data for weight limits, wall anchoring, or ceiling height, so this guide does not guess. The maker's listing and instructions are the place to read those details. This guide compares beds on stated details and live prices only.

Do these cabinet beds come with a mattress?

Some listings state a mattress in the title, such as the AFI Hamilton Queen Murphy Bed Chest and several Night & Day models. Others do not mention a mattress. Read the product listing to see what is included. The title is the only source for this guide.

Can I leave items on top of the cabinet when the bed is open?

The listings do not state whether items can remain on top. Some cabinet beds have a flat top that can hold decor, but the maker's instructions are the best source. This guide only reports what the title states, so check the product page for details.

How do I choose between a twin, full, or queen cabinet bed?

Consider the room size and how many people will sleep on it. A twin is compact, a full fits one or two, and a queen offers more space. The title states the mattress size, and the listing gives dimensions. Measure your room and read the listing's own dimensions.

Are these cabinet beds easy to move?

The listings do not state weight or mobility. Cabinet beds are generally freestanding, but the maker's instructions will say how to move them. This guide does not guess at ease of movement, so read the product page for details.
